Project Overview
The purpose of the project was to upgrade the components of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) serving the Taoyuan Metropolitan Area in northern Taiwan including those for traffic control systems and Advanced Transportation Management Systems (ATMS).
The project aims to
-
upgrade the functions of the original system;
-
make further expansions and improvements to the systems; and
-
integrate equipment and components with the existing system to establish a new overall system for ITS.
Types of equipment and components that were implemented or upgraded include:
-
Vehicle Detectors (VD) for detecting vehicular flow and speeds.
-
Changeable Message Signs (CMS) for disseminating traffic and transportation information.
-
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) for monitoring traffic and transportation conditions.
-
Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) using license plate recognition technology for calculating speeds at multiple points within a road section.
-
Dynamic signaling and control detection equipment for detecting the traffic and congestion conditions.
-
Signal Controller devices, and
-
Intelligent Sign Displays to provide real-time information concerning locations and time at public bus stops.
The project not only made improvements to the existing overall traffic situation of Taoyuan, but also established a solid foundation for progressing with more improvements or upgrading that will be planned or implemented in the future.
