Project Overview

As part of the long-term urban development of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan, the Kaohsiung City Government adopted the Build – Operate – Transfer (BOT) model for constructing the Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit System (KMRT).

The initial network of the KMRT is made up of two lines (Red and Orange Lines) with 37 stations covering a distance of 42.7 kilometers. The north-south Red Line has a length of 28.3 kilometers with 24 stations and the east-west Orange Line covers a length of 14.4 kilometers with 14 stations. The entire initial network was opened for service by September 2008.

More Projects

CECI was engaged to provide engineering design services for a number of these turnkey projects including

Orange Line CO1 Contract:

  • Total route length of 2875 meters,

  • 3 underground stations,

  • 4.124 km of twin bored tunnel connecting the stations

The stations are constructed nearby adjacent buildings and the tunnels pass through the existing buildings. Therefore, grouting, compression air, and other supplemental measures are adopted during excavation under high ground water table, salty, sensitive and soft ground conditions.

Orange Line CO3 Contract:

  • Total route length of 2920 meters,

  • 4 sections of twin-tube shield machine tunnel,

  • 2 sections of cut & cover tunnel and

  • 4 underground stations

This project in particular deals with technicalities of soil engineering and resolving problems attributed to soft soil with high water level in many sections, and also uses the grouting method in the cut and cover tunnel and shield tunnel, especially in the area near existing buildings in the city and shield tunnel driving through the adjacent abutment of National Freeway No. 1.

Red Line CR2 Contract:

  • Total route length of 4070 meters,

  • 4 sections of bored tunnel,

  • 3 underground stations.

Red Line CR7 Contract:

  • Total route length of 10.18 kilometers,

  • The only elevated section of the Red and Orange Lines,

  • 8 elevated stations.

As part of the future expansion of the KMRT network, CECI is also currently carrying out Basic Design services for an extension to the Red Line as well as the Basic Design and Professional Construction Management (PCM) services for a Circular Light Rail Line (Green Line) being phased into the network.
