Project Overview

Chiayi is a bustling city in the southwestern plains of Taiwan and here you can take the nostalgic 71 kilometer long narrow gauge Alishan Forest Railway all the way up to the popular mountain resort of Alishan which sits at an elevation of over 7,000 feet.

Back down in the plains, however, there is more history being made where the Chiayi Urban Area Elevated Railway Project is being built to uplift railway operations in the area with an elevated railway starting from Niouchousi Bridge in the north and ending to the south of the Tropic of Cancer Station.

This Project extends for a length of 10.9 kilometers, and includes

  • 7.9 kilometer long elevated viaduct railway

  • At-grade rail tracks of 3 kilometers in length

  • Two new elevated stations

  • One new at-grade station

  • One coach yard, and

  • Re-construction of the existing Chiabei and Chiayi Stations.

More Projects

Expected benefits of the new railway are:

  • providing more convenient and fast traffic service,

  • balancing the urban development and improving the urban landscape,

  • eliminating 7 at-grade crossings which will in turn relieve traffic congestion,

  • enhancing the quality of life for the area's residents, and

  • improving the use of urban land for boosting economic activities.
